Lucretia Dewey Tanner
A Retrospective
June 18 — July 16, 2022
This exhibition represents a sampling of works done over many years . Early paintings highlight a formal style evolving into recent abstract inspirations.
Lucretia Dewey Tanner, known as Lu to family and friends, started painting after a long career working for the Service Employees International Union, the AFL-CIO and the Federal Government. She also taught at George Washington University as an adjunct professor for 10 years. In her later years she and her husband were involved in philanthropic activities including scholarships for students at George Washington University, McDaniel College and the University’s of Connecticut and Wisconsin.
In addition to her scholarly works, she turned her attention to art and began seriously painting after retiring. Over the twenty years of painting her style has evolved from traditional to abstract impressionism. Throughout her paintings there is a theme of nature rendered in trees and flowers, many of which take on an abstract form allowing the viewer to use their imagination. Many of her paintings lead to the interpretation of the human condition on a quest for enlightenment. Lu favors bright colors which bring an intensity to her paintings.
She has exhibited at The Arts Club of Washington DC along with participating in shows in Southern Maryland and Virginia. Lu’s paintings are hanging in collections in the Washington area along with California, Texas, England and Canada.
